Where do you go on High Street in West Medford now? A year ago the answer included a diner and a burger bar, both open long enough to feel permanent. Both have since closed, four weeks apart. The business moving into one of the spaces has no public opening date. So this November, most of the square's days and evenings run through two storefronts: a cafe that opened last fall and a bookstore with a busier calendar than many event venues.
Here is the stretch from 421 to 458 High Street, address by address, as it stands in November 2026.
421 High Street Is Nearly a Year Old
Twisted Tree Cafe opened at 421 High Street in late November 2025. It was the business's third location, and Patch reported it was the first one outside Lincoln, where the original cafe opened in 2019. The second location opened two years later inside Lincoln's deCordova Sculpture Museum. Patch also reported that coming to Medford was an easy call for co-owner C.J. Doherty.
Its own website lists the West Medford cafe alongside the Lincoln locations and takes online orders for Medford.
Timing is why this address leads the walk. When Twisted Tree opened, the square still had two established sit-down restaurants a few doors away. It reaches its first anniversary this month with neither of them still open. In one year, the newest food business on this stretch has become the longest-running one still serving.
447 and 454 Closed Four Weeks Apart
Paul Revere Restaurant at 447 High Street went first. In a statement to customers, owners Joseph Schanda Jr. and Joseph Schanda Sr. said the restaurant would serve its final meals on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2026, Patch reported on Aug. 17. "It is with a heavy heart that we share that Paul Revere Restaurant will be closing permanently," the owners wrote. No new tenant for 447 has been reported.
Snappy Pattys at 454 High Street followed on Saturday, Sept. 26. It had been open 14 years. MassLive described its menu as American comfort food built around burgers, craft beer and barrel-aged cocktails, served at lunch and dinner every day plus weekend brunch. Boston Restaurant Talk quoted the restaurant's farewell post:
To our wonderful neighbors and friends, After 14 incredible years of serving this community, we have made the difficult decision to close our doors. Our last day of service was Saturday 26th Sept 2026.
Those two closings covered different parts of the day. One was a diner and the other a dinner-and-brunch spot with a bar program, so losing both in the same month took out breakfast, lunch, dinner and a drink after the train, all within a short walk of the West Medford commuter rail stop.
The Pub Coming to 454 Isn't Before the License Commission Yet
The same farewell post said "454 High Street welcomes Rory O'Connors Irish Pub." That's still nearly everything on the public record. Patch's Oct. 2 report, which spells it Rory O'Connor's, said no opening date or other details had been announced.
A pub serving alcohol would normally go through Medford's License Commission, which meets monthly and posts its agendas and minutes on the city's site. The commission's September session handled other licenses and a disciplinary hearing for a different business. Its Oct. 22 session covered minutes, one-day licenses, manager changes and two disciplinary hearings. According to the meeting summaries, the pub came up at neither.
As of late October, then, the pub had not yet reached the public stage of licensing, and a November or December agenda is where the first official sign of 454's next chapter is likely to appear.
458 High Street Has Filled the Calendar
A few doors from the empty Snappy Pattys space, Moon and Back Bookstore runs out of 458 High Street. It's open Tuesday through Saturday, and its site notes the West Medford commuter rail station is within two blocks.
Its November lineup is the fullest public schedule on the block. Most events feature Medford authors, and most fall on weekday mornings and Saturdays, the hours the two closed restaurants used to fill. The month runs from story hours into a holiday-shopping night:
| Date | Time | Event at Moon and Back, 458 High St. |
|---|---|---|
| Sat., Nov. 7 | 10:30 a.m. | Book launch with Medford author Jan Heng for her fourth book, Who Has a Pet Guinea Pig?, joined by the founder of Piggy Overnight Camp, a nonprofit guinea pig rescue |
| Sat., Nov. 7 | 2:30 p.m. | Storytime with a Medford author, the founder of Comfort Cuddles by Erin, featuring The Brave Blanket Crew |
| Wed., Nov. 11 | 10:30 a.m. | Storytime and craft with local author Ellen Mayer and her granddaughter, a Medford student, featuring Flutter, Flap, FLY! |
| Mid-November | Overnight | 2nd Annual Stuffie Sleepover; the store's listing gives both Nov. 13–14 and Nov. 14–15, so confirm drop-off timing with the shop |
| Fri., Nov. 20 | 5:30–7:30 p.m. | First Sip 'n Shop, an adults-only evening of wine and holiday shopping, $10 |
The Nov. 20 Sip 'n Shop is the one that matters most for the street. It's the store's first evening event of this kind, and it lands on a Friday night, when a bar and a burger place used to keep this stretch lit. The listing pitches it plainly: leave the kids at home, grab a glass of wine and get holiday shopping done with friends.
The Saturday, Nov. 7 doubleheader makes an easy loop: the 10:30 a.m. launch at 458, lunch or coffee at Twisted Tree at 421, then back for the 2:30 p.m. storytime. Every stop is a short walk on the same stretch of High Street.
Around the Corner on Arlington Street
The square's weeknights reach one block past High Street. The West Medford Community Center at 111 Arlington Street runs Zumba every Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. According to its September 2026 program notice, it's an ongoing class, not a one-off event, so check the center's schedule before a holiday week.
What Could Change on High Street Before the Holidays
Over the next few weeks, the stretch from 421 to 458 could change in four specific ways:
- 454 High Street. Look for Rory O'Connor's on an upcoming License Commission agenda. It would be the first public step toward an opening.
- 447 High Street. Paul Revere Restaurant's former space has no reported tenant. Any new restaurant use would likely show up in local coverage or city filings first.
- 421 High Street. Twisted Tree Cafe reaches one year in Medford in late November.
- 458 High Street. Moon and Back's Sip 'n Shop on Nov. 20 is the block's main evening event before Thanksgiving.
Until a sign goes up at 454 or 447, the square's calendar runs mostly through the bookstore and the cafe.
We follow who signs the leases at 447 and 454, and when the pub turns up on a commission agenda, because changes like these on High Street shape day-to-day life on the streets around the West Medford stop.
